牡丹 / Mu Dan
The medicinal herb derived from the Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) is specifically its root bark, known as Mu Dan Pi (牡丹皮). It is important to differentiate this from Shao Yao (e.g., Bai Shao or Chi Shao), which is the root of the herbaceous, non-woody peony plant. Mu Dan Pi is described in traditional texts as having an acrid and pungent taste, a cold nature, and being non-toxic.
According to classical sources, the primary functions of Mu Dan Pi are to clear heat, cool the blood, and invigorate blood circulation to disperse stasis. Its heat-clearing properties made it a key herb for treating conditions such as fevers and chills, nosebleeds, vomiting blood, and certain skin sores and abscesses. It was particularly valued for addressing "steaming bone disorder," a type of deep, consumptive heat. Its ability to cool and move the blood was also employed for gynecological issues, including absent menstruation and pain.
Furthermore, its strong effect on blood circulation was used to treat fixed abdominal masses, internal blood stasis (especially in the digestive tract), and to resolve bruising and expel pus from physical trauma. Various texts note its wide range of historical applications, from treating different types of headaches and pain from overexertion to addressing postpartum complications and even acting as an antidote for certain ancient poisons.
Classical herbalists like Li Shizhen specified that only the single-petaled red and white varieties of the Tree Peony were optimal for medicinal use. In summary, Mu Dan Pi is regarded as a vital herb for conditions where pathogenic heat enters the blood level, and for resolving issues related to blood stagnation and stasis.
Its root, flower, stem, and leaves can all be used as medicine and have similar effects, but the root is the most potent.
