Often nicknamed "Desert Ginseng," it refers primarily to the fleshy stems of parasitic plants like Cistanche deserticola or Cistanche tubulosa, which thrive by attaching to the roots of host plants in arid regions of the world.

As a revered tonic herb, Rou Cong Rong has a long history of use, particularly noted for its profound nourishing effects related to the Kidney system in TCM, which governs vital functions including growth, development, reproduction, and aging. It is often associated with enhancing vitality and promoting longevity.

In TCM terms, Cistanche has a sweet and salty taste and a warm nature. It is understood to primarily influence the Kidney and Large Intestine organ systems and their associated channels.
