✍🏻 LYRICS & COMPOSITION BY EME LATINA (2026)
🎗️ In honor of Cancer Awareness, and dedicated to anyone who has suffered any illness or struggle, and who might’ve lost loved ones along the way…
-------------
ABOUT:
-------------
This song is written from the perspective of someone experiencing a loss of control over their own life, whether that’s because of an illness, an obstacle, or grief. The lyrics are intentionally open-ended so they can speak to multiple perspectives at once.
For me, it’s also deeply personal. The chorus is written in honor of my mom. She had this mindset she lived by (and that she taught me): anger and sadness won’t change the outcome. You feel it, certainly, but then you must steady your mind, and keep going!
Ultimately, it’s a reflection on fragility, resilience, and perspective. It is a reminder that time isn’t guaranteed, and that what truly matters can sometimes only become clear when it’s at risk; what matters, be it from your perspective or theirs, will one day be missed.
------------
LYRICS:
------------
Yesterday I was breathing without thinking about it,
the way you wake up and you just do;
the way your body has grown used to
showing up every day for you
Today I exhaled a lengthier breath;
I tried to inhale a little more strength,
into a body I’ve been trusting to do its best,
and air collected just heavier in my chest
And I’m learning
I can’t be angry
It won’t change me back
I can’t be sad
It won’t change me back
What I have now
Can’t change it back
It’s the new shape of my life
I will carry the love that I know,
even when I can’t carry the day;
and I’ll stand in the ache that I know,
until either it or I fade away
How does this end?
How do I live?
How do you love?
How do you believe?
Not who I was
Not who I’ll be
Somewhere between
Old and future me
And I’m learning
I can’t be angry
It won’t change me back
I can’t be sad
It won’t change me back
What I have now
Can’t change it back
It’s the new shape of my life
Tomorrow isn’t fixed, and it isn’t guaranteed
You hope you do enough, you pray to change what is
And if you make it there, past any and all of this,
Rejoice in what matters, what matters will be missed
