——
Firefly / 螢火 (Yíng Huǒ)

Firefly (Yíng Huǒ), an insect of the Lampyridae family, is used whole in traditional Chinese medicine. Also known by names such as "Night Shine" (Yè Guāng), it is considered slightly warm in nature and acrid in taste, and is said to primarily enter the Liver channel.

Its main traditional functions are to improve vision, treat conditions referred to as "green blindness" (often interpreted as ailments like glaucoma), dispel dimness of sight, and calm the spirit (Shen). The Shennong Bencao Jing (The Divine Husbandman's Classic of Materia Medica) records its use for "brightening the eyes, treating green blindness, addressing 'collapsed yin' in children, and stopping 'wasting thirst.'" This classic text also notes its toxicity, for which reason it was classified as a lower-grade medicinal.

Yet, with its faint, tiny light, appearing and vanishing unpredictably—a mere glimmering speck in the dark night—it can guide the lost traveler, even as it captivates and bewilders the human heart.
